Newsroom Safety in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania
This study examines the status of newsroom safety in three East Africa countries, namely Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It contends that media freedom
is critical in the study countries because it offers journalists the autonomy to do their work without undue influence or interference from various actors including the owners, the advertisers, the government and the managers, as well as factors like threats and pressures that affect the capacity of journalists to serve the public interest. This is amidst rapid changes in most newsrooms across the region occasioned by the financial challenges that have transformed the journalistic environment.
The study – conducted between January 2023 and January 2024 - focused specifically on the owner, the advertiser and the source interference with reporting, the pay or remuneration, the terms and conditions of employment, the newsroom environment, media house independence, source of challenges faced by media houses, the threats faced by journalists, the effect of the threats faced by journalists, the opportunities to promote journalistic or media independence, and the internal opportunities for journalists.
