EAES Seeks AI-in-Media Researcher

The Eastern Africa Editors' Society (EAES) is recruiting a qualified researcher to analyze AI use in Eastern African newsrooms (Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya). This study will assess the prevalence, ethics, and impact of AI on media freedom, citizen participation, and democratic processes.

The researcher will map current AI integrations and develop best practices aligned with the Paris Charter on AI and Journalism, considering the region's unique media landscape. The research aims to empower stakeholders with knowledge to harness AI ethically for a stronger democracy. This work will be carried out in the context of the Africa Digital Rights Fund with support from the Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA).

Key Responsibilities

  • Research Design: Develop a detailed research framework and methodology to

    explore AI adoption in African newsrooms.

  •  Data Collection: Gather quantitative and qualitative data through surveys, interviews, case studies, and analysis of existing literature.

  • Mapping AI Adoption: Identify and document the extent, forms, and effectiveness of AI technologies currently being used by media organizations in Africa.

  • Best Practices Development: Analyze findings to recommend best practices for AI integration that are practical, ethical, and sustainable.

  • Reporting: Compile a comprehensive report and impactful presentations to communicate the research findings, insights, and recommendations.

    Qualifications

  • Academic Background: A Master’s degree or higher in Media Studies, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field.

  • Research Experience: Proven experience in conducting research, preferably at the intersection of technology and media.

  • Knowledge of AI: Strong understanding of AI technologies and their applications in the media industry.

  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret data and develop actionable insights.

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.

  • Regional Insight: Familiarity with the Eastern African media landscape and its unique challenges and opportunities.
